FlySafair Luggage Policy

Our basic FlySafair fare, the Lite Fare, entitles you to one free carry-on bag which excludes any checked-in luggage. This free carry-on bag weighs up to 7kg.

When booked on this fare, any carry-on bag weighing above 7kg will be charged an extra R350 at the airport. We created our fares this way so that our customers would have the option to save money, by not taking checked-in luggage if they don't need it.

Many airlines claim that you get free checked luggage with their fares, but the price of that luggage is automatically built into the price of the fare. At FlySafair, we believe that you should only pay for what you need, so no checked luggage, no charge.

Our Fares

We structured our fares for flexibility and affordability, giving holiday goers and business people the option to customise their flight the way they want and only pay for what they want or need. Find out more about our fares here.

Heavy Luggage: Our standard checked luggage allowance is 20kg. Bags that are over 20kgs will be charged a fixed heavy luggage fee of R350 per piece at the airport. For the sake of simplicity we charge a single flat fee, rather than a scaled fee. Any bag over 32kg will have to be transported as cargo.

Accepted Luggage Types

To prevent blockages and breakdowns in the baggage handling system caused by bags that do not have any flat surfaces or that have long straps or grips as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines.

Bags that are round or do not have a flat surface of any kind are the largest source of jams in the baggage handling system.

These jams can shut down sections of the baggage handling system, delay baggage delivery to aircraft and inconvenience passengers and airlines.

The baggage rules are:

  • Only regular-shaped bags will be allowed at check-in counters;
  • This means that the bags must have at least one flat surface to be accepted on the check-in system;
  • Round or irregular-shaped bags will not be allowed at check-in counters; and
  • Bags with longs straps will not be allowed at check-in counters.

Passengers trying to check in bags that do not conform to these rules will be offered the option of having their baggage wrapped at an approved baggage wrapping station in the airport at an additional cost of ±R90 per bag, payable at the wrapping station in cash only.
