About Us

Why we do it for the for the love of flying

FlySafair (pronounced: "fly-saf-air") began operations in October 2014, but the company behind the airline, Safair, has been in operation for over 50 years. Here's a bit of history on both entities:

How it started

Safair, established in 1965, is one of Africa's foremost specialist aviation companies offering a wide range of specialist airlift services. In one part of the business we operate an incredible type of aircraft called the Lockheed Hercules C130. These amazing aircraft allow us to carry large and bulky cargo, such as small fire engines, and land in obscure places, such as short dirt runways in deep Africa.

The other side of our business has been a leasing and cargo business. Here we largely operate Boeing aircraft on contracts for other airlines. If you've been a semi-regular flyer in South Africa since the 1980s there's actually a very high chance that you've been on a Safair aircraft before. We actually operated the maiden flight for Kulula and have done work for Air Namibia, South African Airways and Ryanair to name a few.

How it is going

Safair has been involved in passenger airlines for a long time, but before FlySafair, we'd never flown under our own colours. Operating on a lease basis we've flown for numerous local and international airlines including SAA, Mango, Kulula, RyanAir and many others.

On the 16th of October 2014 we took to the skies with our own pink and blue tail and the business entered into a whole new era. Our low fares immediately disrupted the market bringing down the average cost of flying by as much as 32% on some of the routes we operated. This in turn opened up the world of air travel to many South Africans who'd never had the chance to fly before. We can imagine that after landing on dirt runways in the heart of Africa, the smooth runways of South Africa's major airports are no sweat at all for Safair's skilled crews.

Our Routes

A lot has changed since our launch in October 2014. When we launched, we started our operations with only two aircraft operating between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Our schedule has increased immensely since then, and we've also added to the number of aircraft we operate. As it stands, we are currently sitting on 22 aircraft. This has assists us in achieving our dream of flying all over South Africa, although we are not quite where we want to be as yet.

Our Credentials

FlySafair boasts a full IOSA safety accreditation. IOSA is the IATA Operational Safety Audit and represents the foremost measure of the safety for airlines across the world. While Safair has held these credentials for a while, Audits are conducted periodically and our last audit, which we passed with flying colours, was conducted in April 2021.

Safair is also a Level 4 BBBEE contributor.

Our Accolades

Since our launch in October 2014, we are proud to have been awarded many accolades. We could not have achieved this without the hard work and dedication of our staff and the support of our customers. View the history and details of FlySafair's Accolades.

Our Vision and Mission

When we launched the airline we saw a great opportunity in the South African market to make a difference. We wanted to create an airline that would open the skies to many who had never flown before thanks to great fares, and we wanted to do this while offering a really solid service. As a result of this we have the following vision and mission:

To be South Africa's favourite airline

We unite people with what and who they love, by providing a low-fare, hassle-free, and on-time travel experience

Aviation is not without its challenges, but our love for it has kept us going even through the difficult times. This is why to this day, we've kept to our mission of uniting people with who and what they love, by providing a low-fare, hassle-free, and on-time travel experience.
